Our top 10 ideas for making impactful Christmas product packaging
1. Create unique packaging shapes to pique interest
Top of the list is one of our favourites! We love creating unique packaging and designing unusual shapes is right up our street.
Over the years we have produced a range of interesting packaging shapes including Christmas crackers for charcuterie company, The Greek Farmer. These were fun to create and we enjoyed working out how they needed to fold and fit together within a larger box for displaying in a retail setting.
Cracker shapes are also popular for alcohol miniatures like the Scottish gin company, Rock Rose. This seasonal packaging shape is very flexible and suitable for a whole range of products.
There is such a variety of packaging shapes to choose from, your imagination and the packaging practicalities are your only limitations. For example, other Christmas themed shapes could include baubles, Christmas trees, houses, stockings, candy canes, stars, bells, snowflakes and many more.
Just bear in mind how the packaging will be presented in a retail setting, the overall costs to produce and how it will be stored and transported.
2. Create an advent calendar for a good sales boost
A great way to create a loyal Christmas following is to bring out an advent calendar every year. This is perfect for promoting your whole product range and boosting the exposure of lesser known products. We’ve created a whole article on promotional advent calendars if you would like to find out more.
3. Repurpose current packaging by adding little embellishments
If you are looking to add a splash of festive cheer to your product packaging but don’t want to design everything from scratch, then adding little embellishments that give your packaging festive vibes is a great solution. Whether it is a sprinkling of gold foiled snowflakes or colourful pantone hanging baubles, some embellishments will ensure your packaging celebrates Christmas whilst keeping costs low.
4. Create packaging that can be used as a decoration
Have you considered making your packaging into a piece of festive decoration? Is your product small enough to be made into a pretty tree decoration that can be hung from the tree? If yes, you could consider creating product baubles that people can pick off the tree as a treat on the lead up to Christmas or to find on Christmas day.
Alternatively, your Christmas product packaging could double up as a gift box that can be popped under the Christmas tree or put on the side if your product isn’t perishable and is given as a gift. We have also found that advent calendars are often left out where people can see them where they can be enjoyed every day.
5. Add a festive belly band to your current packaging
Not sure if you want to design Christmas packaging at all? A very quick and cost-effective solution to add a nod to Christmas is to design a belly band to wrap around your existing boxes without needing to create a whole new piece from scratch. Simply slip the festive belly band over your packaging and voila, you have Christmas-ready packaging!
These are very easy to store and are cost-effective to produce, perfect for last-minute decisions if you feel it’s getting a bit tight for time as Christmas edges closer.
6. Create luxury packaging
Christmas is a time when people indulge in treats and luxury products, so adding a premium experience to your packaging is a great way to make your product even more special.
The sensation of luxury can be evoked by stimulating different sensations through the use of quality materials, professional imagery, special embellishments and smooth textures.
Investing in luxury packaging around Christmas increases the chances of your product being purchased as a gift either for the consumer or a loved one.
7. Entice consumers with bespoke die cut apertures
Another idea of creating something different to your competitors is to design a themed aperture that tempts customers by showing them some of the product inside. Apertures (or windows) are great for Christmas food packaging as customers buy with their eyes, so being able to see the product inside can be very enticing.
Die cutting means you can create an almost limitless range of shapes – for example you could create Christmas related windows shaped like holly, trees, crackers, snowflakes, snowmen, baubles, stockings to name a few.
8. Create miniature bottle packaging for your miniature products
Are you a drinks company that could or already sells miniatures as part of your range? Christmas miniature gift boxes are great for Christmas gifts for friends and family to enjoy over the Christmas period.
These miniature bottle boxes usually present your miniatures in groups of 3 to 5 and can be used for a wide range of products and not just alcohol miniatures.
9. Design special edition packaging for products only available at Christmas
People like exclusivity and limited editions so creating something that is truly unique to Christmas is a great way to encourage your customers to purchase your product. Your product’s limited availability will encourage your consumers to make a regular purchase. Special edition products make the perfect gift for loved ones or for consumers to enjoy themselves over the festive period.
10. Retain your eco credentials
It is important to make sure you Christmas packaging meets your consumer’s eco expectations. The majority of consumers expect your packaging to be at least recyclable. Here at Newton Print, we are a Carbon Balanced printing company who can create packaging from recycled materials so you can go that one step further. It doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice the Christmas embellishments – most printing effects are biodegradable and recyclable.
